Born in Pinar del Río, Cuba, in 1958, he is a philologist, writer, essayist, arts critic, and audiovisual communicator. A specialist in Ibero-American cinema, he taught the subject for several years at the International Film and Television School of Cuba. For almost three decades, he has written and hosted the Cuban television program De Nuestra América, devoted to Latin American cinema, culture, and thought.

Throughout his career, he has published books of essays, criticism, fiction, and poetry, including Más allá de la linterna, La profesión maldita, Las celadas de Narciso, Los latidos del espejo, Sinfonía inconclusa para cine cubano, El cineasta que llevo dentro, and De la letra a la esencia: Mirta Aguirre y el barroco literario. He has received several awards and distinctions, among them the National Film Critics Award, the Distinction for National Culture, and the National Cultural Journalism Award. He founded Cine Club “Diferente”, a space devoted to the screening and discussion of LGBTQ-themed films. and has served as a juror and lecturer at cultural and film events in Cuba, the Americas and Europe.
